Recommended Restaurants

Sydney has many excellent restaurants and the ones listed here are either on, or a short taxi ride from, The Finger Wharf. Europeans and Americans will not believe how low the prices are and how high the standard is in many of the listed restaurants. In fact two Sydney restaurants, Tetsuya's and Rockpool were recently named on the Ten Best Restaurants in the World list published by Britain's Restaurant magazine.

On the Finger Wharf

Several of Sydney's top restaurants and cafes are on the western side of The Finger Wharf.

  • China Doll 9380 6744
Great combination of modern Asian food, harbour side views and a buzzing cocktail bar.
  • Otto 9368 7488
Beloved of the "in" crowd, and why not. Great Italian food and slick service.
  • Manta 9332 3822
Sydney and seafood are an obvious pair, and this restaurant presents what's best in oysters, shellfish and fish every day.
  • AKI's 9332 4600
For excellent Indian food, don't miss Aki's, the first restaurant on the Finger Wharf.

The CBD area (five minutes by taxi)

  • Tetsuya's 529 Kent Street, Sydney. Phone 9267 2900
Tetsuya Wakuda is a genius. He offers a staggeringly original marriage of tastes and styles, always with a delicate touch of his native Japan. Book well in advance.

The Rocks/Opera House Precinct (five minutes by taxi)

  • Rockpool 107 George Street The Rocks. Phone 9252 1888
Thailand meets France, via China, in a knockout combination of tastes presented with polished aplomb.
  • Quay Overseas Passenger Terminal, opposite the Opera House. Phone 9251 5600
You're eating great food while enjoying point blank views of the Opera House. Nothing wrong with this picture.
  • The Wharf Restaurant Pier 4, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay. Phone 9250 1761
Like The Finger Wharf, this old wharf has been restored and the stylish restaurant at the end is well worth the walk.
  • Aria 1 Macquarie Street, East Circular Quay. Phone 9252 2555
Fantastic location, out there food. Considered very expensive by locals, so good for an "impress" meal.

In Chinatown (five minutes by taxi)

  • Golden Century 393-399 Sussex Street, Haymarket. Phone 9212 3901
While waiting to be seated, check out what you'd like to eat because most of it is swimming in the nearby tanks. Fast, fun.
  • Marigold 299-305 Sussex Street, Sydney. Phone 9264 6744
A favourite for yum cha. Get there before 11am and still be prepared to wait.

The Woollahra/Paddington area (seven minutes by taxi)

  • Bistro Moncur 116 Queen Street, Woollahra. Phone 9363 2519
Be there by 7pm or be prepared to wait for the first throng to finish. Great French bistro food. Excellent service.
  • Jones the grocer 68 Moncur Street, Woollahra. Phone 9362 1222
Good takeaway soups, curries, vegetable dishes, both fresh and frozen. Breakfast and lunch only.
  • Claudes 10 Oxford Street, Woollahra. Phone 9331 2325
It's little, it's special, and it's home to one of Sydney's most extraordinary chefs. Claude's is a fixed price place, starting at over $120 per head, but seriously good.
  • Lucio's 47 Windsor Street, Paddington. Phone 9380 5996
Friendly, unobtrusive service, a mix of classic and modern Italian dishes. Been going forever.

Surry Hills (seven minutes by taxi)

  • Longrain 85 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills. Phone 9280 2888
From your first taste of betel leaves wrapped around a mouth explosion, you'll be a fan of Longrain. Heaven. Very funky at night.
  • Marque 355 Crown Street, Surry Hills. Phone 9332 2225
Anybody who can get away with caramelising a tomato for a dessert dish is a seriously good chef. Low-key atmosphere, exciting food.
  • billy kwong 3/355 Crown Street, Surry Hills. Phone 9332 3300
Always packed from about 6pm, and understandably. Unusual Chinese food by a real rising star.

Bondi (15 minutes by taxi)

  • Icebergs Dining Room and Bar 1 Notts Avenue, Bondi Beach. Phone 9365 9000
Both the restaurant and bar are award winners and the location, teetering over Bondi, is sensational. A special, stylish experience.
