Making the Most of Your Stay

Once you've explored the walks, restaurants, bars and sights close by, here are some suggestions for venturing further afield. All of the following areas are short taxi rides from The Finger Wharf

  • Little Italy in Stanley Street
Great coffee, gelato and a variety of dining options ranging from the ridiculously cheap No Names, where your plate-sized veal scaloppine is washed down with weak orange cordial, to some more upmarket choices.

  • Oxford Street / Taylor Square/ Darlinghurst
The Oxford Street strip from Whitlam Square (at College Street) up to Glenmore Road is the bars, cafes, art house movie theatre and gay enclave of Sydney.

  • Paddington and Woollahra
The strip of Oxford Street continuing up from Glenmore Road to the corner of Queen Street is retail central for fashionable men's and women's clothing, shoes, cafes, pubs and an excellent Saturday market in the grounds of the Uniting Church, virtually opposite William Street, Paddington. If all that bustle gets too much, turn down any side street to see the almost totally preserved Victorian architecture of Paddington's steep and narrow streets. To explore the shops of Woollahra, turn left at the corner of Queen Street and Oxford Street. Walk down Queen St to the corner of Ocean Street for many world-class antique shops as well as a good choice of cafes, boutiques, bookshops, delis, clothing and other browsing spots.

  • Macleay Street, Potts Point
On Macleay there are elegant old apartment buildings, a restful and shady ambience. You can walk up Macleay Street, starting at the end of Cowper Wharf Road at Garden Island, then turn down Greenoaks Avenue and left into Onslow Avenue where you will find historic Elizabeth Bay House. Tours are available and worthwhile. Keep walking until you turn right into Billyard Avenue and walk past one of Sydney's most famous waterfront mansions, Boomerang, recently sold for $20 million. Rest in waterfront Beare Park before tackling the climb back uphill.
